In the UK, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) Three television network airs a bi-weekly live debate and discussion show titled Free Speech. The program gives BBC viewers the chance to speak up about the biggest issues the UK and world face today. On the latest edition of Free Speech, a group of people from the transgender community get together to answer questions they are typically asked by the trans-ignorant public. Questions people ask but shouldn’t.
“What’s the difference between transvestite and transgender?”
“Which bathroom do you use?”
“Have you had ‘the op’?”
“What do you do in bed?”
“Are you a drag queen?”
Basically, BBC asked so you don’t have to. The transgendered participants respond to the cringe-inducing inquiries in a light-hearted, often humorous tone. Thankfully.
To be perfectly honest, this video was a learning experience for me. I have always been curious about the transgender community, since its members endure such an enormous transition – physically and emotionally. After watching the entertainingly informative clip above, some of my questions were answered and some of yours might be.
