CBS recently released an almost seven minute long “First Look” at their upcoming fall series Supergirl (starring Glee‘s Melissa Benoist as the caped heroine) and the internet’s reaction has been relatively positive. It honestly looks like a great show. Here are five reasons while I’ll particularly be tuning in when it officially debuts later this year:
1. The action looks on-point
For proof, watch the trailer above. In six minutes and thirty-six seconds we see Kara Zor-El perfect her flight take off, aerobically reveal her powers to a friend, carry a whole airplane, physically end a high-speed chase, unflinchingly take bullets and endure hand to hand combat. Supergirl will be kicking ass and taking names with notably higher end special effects.
2. Melissa Benoist’s change from common citizen to alien superhero is actually believable
My one gripe about the Superman and Supergirl franchises has always been geared towards how both characters look practically identical when in costume and not. After watching the trailer for the show, however, I’m impressed with how downplayed the lovely Melissa Benoist‘s looks are when she’s simply day-job Kara and not her super fierce alter ego. More than glasses, a change executed in that manner takes good acting and Benoist seems to bring those isolated levels to the character.
3. Calista Flockhart and Chyler Leigh are back on TV
If you ever were a fan of the TV shows Ally McBeal, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy or the movie Not Another Teen Movie, you’ll understand why I’m so excited to see both of these actresses weekly again.
4. A female led superhero TV show (that’s actually good) is needed and refreshing
Aside from Marvel’s Agent Carter – which is different – we’ve never really had a female dominant superhero effort on television since the 70’s Wonder Woman television show. This needs to change and thankfully will with CBS’s Supergirl.
5. Kara strips into her superhero costume… Just like her cousin Clark and it’s epic
If you didn’t think Kara/Zor-El/Supergirl could do all of the same things that her cousin Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman can, you’re wrong. CBS’s Supergirl goes there.
The “First Look” trailer for Supergirl was so good that I hope CBS didn’t spoil all of the best parts of the show by giving away too much too soon. I guess we’ll just have to see for ourselves when the new superhero based action/drama premieres this Fall.
