Power/Rangers is the 14 minute short film creator Joseph Kahn refers to as a, “Deboot of the Power Rangers. My take on the FAN FILM.” In the visuals that takes a completely dark approach to its kid-friendly counterpart, Kimberly (the assumed pink ranger, played by Katee Sackhoff) is held captive by her former ally (and assumed red ranger, played by James Van Der Beek) Rocky. Through a series of clips we are shown what the gritty world of Kahn’s Power/Rangers is like.
Death, betrayal, sex and unexpected plot twists are the norm, making this reinterpretation refreshingly thrilling, but also completely NSFW. Kahn’s Vimeo description for the film mentions the availability of a clean version on YouTube. If you enjoyed Power/Rangers as much as I did, don’t get too excited. Kahn has shut down any fan expectation for more of this re-envisioning by saying that the project is, “Not a pilot, not a series, not for profit, strictly for exhibition.”
UPDATE: The NSWF version of Power/Rangers gained enough acclaim during its short stint on Vimeo to become an “Editors Pick,” until it was later taken down by Saban Entertainment. Saban holds the rights to the Power Rangers franchise. Even though Kahn’s fan film currently fits the parody genre, protected under the American constitution as a form of “fair use,” the video was still removed from Vimeo’s servers.
