Loving horror films as much as I do has prompted me to review them and anticipate the latest fright-inducing releases coming to theaters in the future. Here are five scary movies debuted in 2015 that I’m particularly excited about:
Only two are remakes, thankfully.
1. The Vatican Tapes (February 27th)
The Vatican Tapes follows the haunting tale of 27 year-old Angela Holmes, who accidentally cuts her finger and ends up in the emergency room. Infection leads to erratic behavior, and she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Priests examine Holmes and believe she is possessed, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than they imagined.
The first new horror movie I’m excited about looks like it’ll be a good exorcism based scare.
2. Unfriended (April 17th)
In Unfriended, while video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it’s a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends’ darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something from beyong this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl’s computer desktop, Cybernatural redefines “found footage” for a new generation of teens.
The chilling trailer, below, has me very excited about this new age slasher flick.
3. Poltergeist (July 24th)
The new Poltergeist is described as a revisionist take on the classic horror film in which a family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.
Since the original film gained a cult following after the eery death of both of its child stars, who knows what antics a 2015 summer remake could possess?
4. Sinister 2 (August 21st)
In Sinister 2, a young mother and her twin sons move into a rural house that’s marked for death.
I’ll never forget my first experience with the Sinister franchise. I went to see the first film at the theater with a group of friends, pictured below. Only three out of the five of us made it through the whole movie. Two of my friends were just too frightened to finish it. The rest of us covered our eyes and carried on. Looking back at the fright-fest that was the first “Sinister,” I can only imagine how part 2 is going to be.
5. Friday The 13th (November 13th)
Valid plot information about the new Friday The 13th movie has not yet been released, due to the fact that the film is still in the very early stages of production.
Regardless of what we have yet to learn about the film, I can’t wait for a new year of Jason Voorhees antics. I’m always here for that.
