A twitter/Instagram post that fashion-blogger Bryanboy recently shared (below) inspired me to recount a part of my life without social media:
I guess Im lucky having experienced what life was like before social media. When I was 20 all we did… http://t.co/l8YbhZLZK2— bryanboy (@bryanboy)
The picture above depicts an eight year old me on a swing during second grade recess.
There was no computer in our household (yet) and Facebook, twitter and Instagram had not even been preconceived. For me, being “social” meant attending kid birthday parties and sleepovers. There were video games and (later) cell-phones, but my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed playing outside. It was definitely a more peaceful time in life that I’m extremely thankful to have enjoyed. It’s crazy to think that children born after 2003 will not be able to relate to a life without some sort of social media or mobile presence.
Never forget that a disconnect can be necessary every now and then.
